IAFL Article:
Young Irish American Football League player, Glenn Baker, aged 19, who has been in the USA Football International Programme, has earned the chance to play NCAA College football for Mount Ida College in Massachusetts for the next 4 years.
Glenn is unique in becoming the first Irish player to progress into the US ranks on scholarship after only ever playing in the sport in Ireland. Glenn, who's family live in Athlone, first took up the sport in 2004 when he joined the Cork Admirals as a 16 year old - his family were living in Cork at this time. Due to his 6-6 size, 20 stone weight and outstanding athletic ability, he very quickly established himself as a starter on the Cork Admirals offensive line. Before the end of his first season, he was selected for the Team Ireland squad and played for Ireland against John Carroll University in the Celtic Classic game. Due to his family relocating, he changed clubs, joining the Dublin Dragons for the 2005 season where he also established himself as a regular starter.
As a result of his performance for Team Ireland against Adrian College Michigan in the 2005 Celtic Classic, he was offered the opportunity to go on scholarship to the USA. For the remainder of 2005, he played for Salisbury Prep School in Connecticut. In 2006, he was one of only 6 European athletes (the other 5 were all German) who were awarded scholarships on the USA Football International Student Program. As a result, he spent the 2006 season with Cheshire Academy in Connecticut where he started on both the offensive and defensive lines. While at Cheshire, he also excelled in athletics, winning the New England High School Shot Putt Championship and performing well in the Discuss.
Glenn should make an impact with the Mount Ida College Mustangs football team where he is expected to break into the starting lineup before long. He will spend the next 4 years at the university where he will study for a degree in computer and graphic arts. If he performs well on field at Mount Ida College, he will have a chance to turn full time professional, most likely via NFL Europa, the NFL's professional development league in Europe.
